Andy Wappler exchanges weather for climate

Andy_wapplerYes, it's true. Andy Wappler is hanging up his raincoat.

Seattle residents, myself included, are a bit bummed. Not just because between Andy and his dad Harry, there has been a Wappler weather forecaster on the Seattle news for nearly four decades but also because we won't get to say "Wappler Doppler" anymore. That rhyme was so absurdly pleasing.

The good news: Andy leaves a 14 career predicting the weather to instead try to do something about it. He is joining Puget Sound Energy, my power company, as a senior Public Relations manager focusing on the consumer message around energy conservation and new renewable energy projects. A man after my own heart!

Sounds like Andy has been working on his own carbon footprint as well. "My family cut its electricity use by nearly 40 percent simply by making a few simple changes such as using compact fluorescent lights in our home,” he said. “I’m looking forward to getting the message out that everybody can play a role in protecting our Northwest environment through smart energy choices."

Wappler Doppler, we will miss you, but congratulations to Andy Wappler.

I was really surprised to turn on the news one day last week and see a blond female instead of Andy, and not a word from Steve Raible and company! I knew something was up. I'm happy for Andy, and sad for the rest of us. For some of us, he was the only reason to watch the weather! I always loved watching the Wapplers.
