Greg Nickels pledges to make Seattle "Green Building Capital"

Green_building Seattle is already a world leader in new green buildings, but what about the buildings that already exist? Today, in his "state of the city" address, Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels rolled out a plan to improve the energy-efficiency of existing buildings. This proposal is an important step en route to the broader goal of cutting Seattle's emissions 80 percent by 2050.

Nickels intends to do this through his Green Building Capital program, which has three goals:

  • Improve energy efficiency in residential and commercial buildings by 20 percent.
  • Provide real cost savings for property owners who will see their heating bills drop as waste is reduced.
  • Create new green jobs for those working to make our homes, offices, and stores more energy efficient.

Seattle emissions are already down 8% from 1990 levels, despite significant population growth, but Seattle has significant work to do to achieve its emissions goals.
