It's official: go green, or go to hell.

Today the Vatican issued a statement listing seven new sins that people living in today's world should be cognizant of. And somewhat surprisingly, "polluting the environment" was one of them, ranking somewhere near drug dealing, human experimentation and pedophilia.

I wasn't kidding about the hell part. These are classified as "mortal" sins. That's right...the big bad ones that lead to eternal damnation.

Rumor on the street is that the Vatican is preparing for a big ecology/environmental push, and this is a small step in preparation for that.

At the very least Catholics will have more to take into confession now. "Father I have sinned, I bought a bottle of water this week and threw it in the trash..."

I wrote about this same topic on my blog. I really hope that this will make a difference but until churches themselves go greener I don't really see it happening.
