Bush ready to pass global warming legislation?
The Washington Times shockingly reports this morning that President Bush decided to to announce early this week that he wants Congress to pass legislation to combat global warming.
Key members of the Republican Party seem confused on the sudden shift in direction, and no one is certain what Bush will say. Many theorize that the recent states-driven lawsuit vs. the EPA to require regulation of greenhouse gases is forcing action the issue. Bush may fear a regulatory nightmare as we move towards carbon regulation, and likely wants to get ahead of the game in protecting businesses from overhead.
All current presidential candidates favor a cap-and-trade program, similar to the one currently running in the E.U. It is unclear whether President Bush intends to go that far.
It will certainly be an interesting week...

I could see this as a PR move on his part if he was seeking a 2nd term, but this really is shocking.
Seriously though, I never expected to see Bush pushing for anything like this!

Probably done for publicity but any move towards improving the environment, with the US being one of the biggest polluters and it's refusal to sign the Kyoto Protocol for years, will be very welcome :)

I think he is taking advantage of the eco-movement to try and make himself look better and leave office with more popularity than he has recently been known for.
I was wondering, would you be interested in exchanging blogroll links?

Bush is laughable...the kyoto protcol comes to mind...
At least the issue has been become large enough that even the GOP is shining some light on it...With all of the mess Obama is hopefully going to step into, it will be interesting to see how far he takes the global warming issue.

So this is completely irrelevant, but I just noticed that the permalink to this post is "bush-ready-to-p" and got a giggle out of it. Hey, I'm tired, leave me alone!

Hi Bravenewleaf, First time here at your blog, and wanted to check you out. I've read some of your post and find them very enlightening. I must admit I'm just getting on the ban wagon for the environment...that is to say I have always tried to pratice the theory behind it. I live in the woods with lots of trees around me, so when I go into town and I see new malls or mini-strip malls going in -I do get that feeling like once you cut it,it's gone. But now it's more than just stopping the cutting of trees, people are saving jars, taking labels off of can goods and storing all of these in separate containers. This is something new to me, and I find it gets easier to do. It's good that we have people like you around to remind us of all the repercussions if we don't smarten up. Thanks
